4-Week Cognitive Maritime Training Syllabus
Develop practical decision-making, situational awareness, ship handling, emergency response, and basic Bridge Resource Management skills using professional-grade hydrodynamic modeling and instructor-led scenarios in a free browser-based environment.
Week 1: Basic Ship Control & Hydrodynamics
Focus: Understanding vessel behavior, engine & steering response, and environmental effects.
Learning Objectives
- Master the UI layout, keyboard conning (W/S, A/D), and camera views.
- Understand engine inertia, head reach, and the physical lag between Command RPM and Actual SOG.
- Identify and predict advanced hydrodynamic forces: Squat Effect, Bank Effect, and Prop Walk.
Daily Breakdown
- Day 1-2: Familiarization. Start in Free Roam. Practice accelerating to NAV FULL, bringing rudder Hard-Over (35°), and observing the Rate of Turn (ROT) indicator.
- Day 3-4: Deep Physics. Execute a “Crash Stop” (FULL AHD to FULL AST). Observe Prop Walk pulling the stern. Drive at high speed near the dock to trigger Bank Effect. Watch the UKC gauge drop due to Squat.
- Day 5: Assessment. Perform a straight 5 NM transit stopping exactly at a plotted coordinate. Export the CSV telemetry.
Instructor Guidance & Metrics
Host a session and have the trainee join. Use TACTICAL PAUSE to freeze physics and discuss the vessel’s pivot point during sharp turns.
Debrief: Navigate to the Assessment tab. Review the Inertia Analytics Graph. The gap between the Amber line (Command RPM) and Green line (SOG) perfectly illustrates the vessel’s stopping distance.
Week 2: Navigation & Collision Avoidance
Focus: ECDIS-style navigation, ARPA targets, and COLREGs application.
Learning Objectives
- Proficiently plot, clear, and follow waypoints on the interactive radar.
- Monitor and interpret Cross-Track Error (XTE) and live ETA.
- Assess ARPA data (CPA/TCPA) to execute timely COLREGs-compliant maneuvers.
- Navigate solely by instruments in restricted visibility.
Daily Breakdown
- Day 1-2: Plotting. Click the radar canvas to plot a 3-leg route. Maintain an XTE of less than 20m.
- Day 3-4: Load Scenario: Rule 17: Rogue Vessel. Monitor the ARPA target list. Wait until the CPA flashes red (< 500m), then take decisive evasive action as the stand-on vessel.
- Day 5: Instructor manually drops Visibility to 0.1 and increases Rain. Navigate a route purely using the ECDIS panel and ARPA trails.
Instructor Guidance & Metrics
Utilize the VHF Radio to act as VTS or the rogue vessel. Force the trainee to communicate their intentions via text before altering course.
Debrief: Check the “AVG XTD” (Average Cross-Track Distance) in the Efficiency Metrics. Look for a clean, deliberate course alteration on the Voyage Track Replay, avoiding small, successive helm adjustments.
Week 3: Emergency Response & Man Overboard
Focus: Immediate action drills, high-pressure decision making, and recovery.
Learning Objectives
- Instantly execute emergency protocols (Helm hard over, MOB marker drop).
- Perform standard recovery maneuvers (Williamson Turn, Single Delayed Turn).
- Utilize HUD telemetry (Reciprocal Bearing and Range) to intercept a stationary target in the water.
Daily Breakdown
- Day 1-2: Standard MOB. At NAV FULL, hit the red MOB button. Execute a Williamson Turn (Hard over until 60° deviation, then hard opposite until reciprocal heading).
- Day 3-4: Load Scenario: Emergency: MOB at Night. Heavy weather makes steering difficult. Instructor utilizes LOCK TRAINEE to temporarily simulate steering gear failure during the turn.
- Day 5: Assessment. Complete the MOB Night scenario, bringing the vessel to a complete stop within 50m of the marker.
Instructor Guidance & Metrics
Introduce environmental set/drift in the Environment tab without warning the trainee. They must compensate for wind pushing them off the reciprocal bearing.
Debrief: Play the Debrief Replay. Analyze the tear-drop shape of the Williamson turn on the Voyage Track. Was the ship stopped (< 1.0 kn) upon reaching the survivor?
Week 4: Anchoring, Berthing & Operations
Focus: Deck operations, tug utilization, and full integrated scenario management.
Learning Objectives
- Calculate and deploy correct anchor scope based on environmental strain.
- Utilize Bow/Stern Tugs and Bow Thrusters for lateral berthing.
- Execute warping maneuvers using the Forward Spring Line.
- Manage complex, multi-phase voyages with changing parameters.
Daily Breakdown
- Day 1-2: Anchoring. Drop anchor and pay out shackles. Instructor increases wind to 40kn to force an Anchor Dragging alarm. Trainee must pay out more chain to secure the vessel.
- Day 3-4: Load Scenario: Berthing: High Wind Push. Use 100% Port tugs and thruster to fight the wind. Attach the Fwd Spring to warp the stern alongside the dock.
- Day 5: Final Exam. Integrated voyage. Start in Free Roam, plot a route to the dock, navigate a Dynamic Weather shift, and berth successfully without triggering a grounding alarm.
Instructor Guidance & Metrics
Activate the Dynamic Scenario toggle. This forces the trainee to constantly re-evaluate windage and set/drift as the weather naturally evolves over the timeline.
Debrief: Check the “Min UKC” to ensure no shallow water safety margins were breached. Confirm all four badges have been earned via the Assessment “Evaluate” button.
